President Donald Trump announced that the United States launched a “powerful and deadly strike” against Islamic State (IS) targets in north-western Nigeria, confirming that the US military executed “numerous perfect strikes” on Thursday in Sokoto state, according to reports from the US Africa Command.
The US leader described the terrorist group as “scum” and accused them of “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians.” However, Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar told reporters that they planned the “joint operation” over a significant period, emphasizing that the mission “has nothing to do with a particular religion” and relied heavily on local intelligence.
Furthermore, the minister indicated that future strikes remain a possibility, noting that these actions depend on “decisions to be taken by the leadership of the two countries.” US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this sentiment of cooperation, expressing gratitude for Nigerian government support on social media.
Countering Radical Extremism
On Truth Social, Trump asserted that “under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper.” The Department of Defense released footage showing a missile launch from a military vessel to confirm the recent tactical movement. Subsequently, Nigeria’s foreign ministry confirmed that structured security cooperation remains vital for addressing the persistent threat of violent extremism.
While Trump claimed he declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” due to an “existential threat” to Christians, local data tells a different story, with groups like Acled suggesting that jihadist groups have actually killed more Muslims than Christians over the last decade of conflict.
Adviser Daniel Bwala stated that Nigeria welcomes US help but reminded the international community that Nigeria remains a “sovereign” country, also noting that insurgents kill people from all faiths or none, rather than focusing on one specific religious group. President Bola Tinubu continues to insist that religious tolerance prevails despite the security challenges currently affecting various regions.
These strikes follow a recent massive US military operation against Islamic State targets located within the borders of central Syria.
