UNRWA Receives 2M from Saudi Arabia Amid Gaza Crisis
Saudi Arabia delivered its annual financial contribution of $2 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Jordan Naif Bin Bandar Al-Sudairi handed over the $2 million cheque to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini to help the agency proceed its relief efforts.
UNRWA is working on delivering food, medication and other human needs to the Palestinian people.
“Saudi Arabia always stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and supports the agency to achieve its humanitarian efforts,” said Lazzarini, thanking the Kingdom for this generous support.
“We need this solidarity and support more than ever,” added the commissioner.
He called on UN member states and the international community to back the agency’s efforts to support the Palestinian people during these critical conditions.
This donation is one of a series of decades-long donations totaling $1 billion, putting KSA on top of the list of donors.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia invited the UNRWA commissioner.
The Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Supervisor-General of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRC) discussed the Kingdom’s solidarity with Palestine.
Unrelenting Support from Diplomatic Forums to Financial Aid
Saudi Arabia has always adopted a pro-Palestine stance whether by advocating for the Palestinian cause or through financing relief efforts.
Given the recent unfolding events in Gaza, Saudi Arabia has been in talks with China, US, Iran and France defending the innocent civilians.
What is UNRWA?
Given the 75-year-old struggle of the Palestinians and stifling conditions they have been living in, there was a blinding need for an agency to work on loosening the grip and that is how UNRWA was born.
Established in 1949, UNRWA initially aimed to offer humanitarian relief and protection to registered Palestine refugees within the agency’s operational area while they await a just and permanent resolution to their situation.
However, its humanitarian efforts expanded to include refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.
UNRWA extends a helping hand to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
In a bid to cover all aspects of life, the agency’s humanitarian efforts include education, health care, relief and social services, protection, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance, and emergency assistance.
