US President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned that he could renew strikes on Iran if Tehran does not “behave,” just days ahead of the formal signing of their preliminary deal.
Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France, Trump said that the deal with Iran is not final. “It’s a memorandum of understanding. And if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head,” he noted.
“If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head, OK?” Trump warned.
The US and Iran reached a preliminary deal that halted the fighting and initiated a 60-day period of negotiations aimed at securing a permanent agreement. The formal signing of the deal will take place on June 19 in Geneva.
While the exact details of the deal have not been publicly disclosed, Trump praised the framework agreement. “That’s a very strong deal. Nobody knows what it is, but it’s very strong, and most people seem to be very happy,” he said, dismissing reports that it includes immediate sanctions relief for Iran.
The G7 leaders voiced support for the US-Iran deal for providing a “historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities,” signaling readiness to contribute to its implementation.
In a joint statement, the leaders backed the multinational defensive naval mission led by France and the UK to ensure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Moreover, they supported an “immediate robust ceasefire” in Lebanon and the disarmament of Iranian-backed Hezbollah.
