Dr. Abdullah bin Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, President of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), affirmed that Saudi Arabia sets an international standard for responsible and ethical AI. One major effort is the approval by the Council of Ministers to establish an international center for AI Research and Ethics in Riyadh.
Today, during the opening of an international consultation session on the management of artificial intelligence organized by “SDAIA” in cooperation with the United Nations Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Dr. Al-Ghamdi stressed the importance of global cooperation in the management of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Al-Ghamdi welcomed the members of the multi-stakeholder High-Level Advisory Body for Artificial Intelligence, established by UN Secretary-General António Guterres last year. He also noted that the session is in preparation for the upcoming third edition of the World Summit on Artificial Intelligence scheduled for Riyadh in September.
He stated that artificial intelligence poses complex challenges in security, privacy, work, and cultural standards. Governments, companies, and international organizations are joining forces to increase awareness and establish robust governance frameworks for AI. He stressed the Kingdom’s commitment to using AI responsibly and ethically.
In the same vein, the Director-General of ISESCO, Dr. Salem Al-Malik, emphasized that artificial intelligence has bright future. This shift isn’t just a distant possibility, but a reality unfolding before us. It calls for a proactive, integrative, and future-focused approach to managing this transformation. He also noted that AI is already ubiquitous, present in 77% of today’s devices.
The consultation session, led by SDAIA, aims to boost the Kingdom’s standing in data and AI. Furthermore, the objective aligns with Kingdom’s recent announcement of hosting the third edition of the World Summit on Artificial Intelligence, under the patronage of Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
