Saudi Film “Prostrate & Come Closer” Wins Cannes Animation Festival Award

The Saudi film “ Prostrate and Come Closer” won the Animation Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, in the category (Winning Animation of Interest).

The film was directed and produced by Thuraya Al-Shehri, in cooperation with her daughter, the visual artist Nabila Abu Al-Jadayel. His idea is based on an original painting painted by Nabila entitled “ Prostrate and Come Closer,” during the Corona pandemic in 2020.

The painting embodies the feelings of the cleaning workers who were able to pray in the Holy Mosque of Mecca during that period, while millions of Muslims were deprived of performing Umrah and Hajj rituals.

This win is an important achievement for Saudi cinema, as it shows the world its ability to produce influential films of high quality.

Saudi Arabia is striving to enhance its presence on the global artistic scene by participating in international festivals and providing generous incentives to those working in the film sector.

Saudi Arabia is participating in the 77th session of the Cannes Film Festival. It began on May 14, in the French city of Cannes, with the film “Norah” by director Tawfiq Al-Zaidi among the list of films participating in the “Un Certain Regard” competition, the second most important international festival competition.

The film’s events take place within a dramatic context in the 1990s in the Kingdom, around Norah, who lives in a remote village, and her life changes when a person arrives who reignites her passion for art.

The movie “Norah” stars Saudi actor Yacoub Al-Farhan, actress Maria Bahrawi, and actor Abdullah Al-Sadhan. It is written and directed by Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, in cooperation with Scottish actor and screenwriter Stephen Strachan.
