The Saudi film “Norah,” which is supported by the Saudi Film Authority will be shown as part of the “Un Certain Regard” competition screenings at the Cannes Film Festival in its current edition. Its screenings will continue until tomorrow in Cannes, France.
The film Norah, directed and written by Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, is the first Saudi film to participate in the Cannes Film Festival competition. It is one of the films of the “Light to Support Films” program provided by the Film Commission to support professional Saudi filmmakers.
The authority aims to strengthen the creative content system by encouraging filmmakers to produce long and short films that keep pace with the international level. It also aims to increase the opportunities available to film production companies to create creative local content.
The Film Commission had participated in the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival with a Saudi pavilion that highlighted the cultural and cinematic richness.
The Authority hosted dialogue seminars, including one titled “Photos in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Norah,”. They welcomed the film’s heroes to discuss details of the film.
Writer and director Tawfiq Al-Zaidi emphasized the Film Commission’s crucial support for the film “Norah.” He explained that the name was chosen because it symbolizes a strong woman. The story follows a woman’s journey to find her voice and underscores art as a form of communication.
Actor Yacoub Al-Farhan, on his part, confirmed that “it is very natural for everyone who worked on this film to feel proud when they see that the film was nominated for ‘Un Certain Regard’ at all levels.”
It is noteworthy that the Film Commission’s participation in the 2024 Cannes Film Festival achieved great success by organizing a Saudi pavilion and a number of dialogue seminars to enhance cultural exchange and global partnerships.
