Dr. Mahmoud Aljurf, M.D., MACP, has made history as the first non-US physician to receive the prestigious Steven E. Weinberger Award for Physician Leaders. This honor, bestowed by the American College of Physicians (ACP), highlights Dr. Aljurf’s significant contributions to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and oncology.
Dr. Aljurf, Director of the Adult Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Program at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC), was honored at the ACP Convocation Ceremony in New Orleans. His global impact is evident in his leadership roles and innovative research.
At KFSHRC, Dr. Aljurf has developed one of the world’s largest stem cell transplantation programs. This has significantly improved treatment options for patients with hematologic malignancies. His leadership has expanded access to novel therapies and elevated global standards in hematology and oncology.
Research and Editorial Leadership
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Aljurf is renowned for his research and editorial contributions. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Saudi Medicine and founded the Elsevier Journal of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Therapy. He sits on the editorial boards of several high-impact journals, including The Lancet Hematology. With nearly 500 scientific publications and five edited books, his influence is profound.
Dr. Aljurf’s impact extends globally. The Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) elected him President in 2023. He also founded the Eastern Mediterranean Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EMBMT) Group, affiliated with WHO/EMRO.
His numerous awards include the Florence A. Carter Leukemia Research Award, the CIBMTR Annual Distinguished Service Award, and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and the Research Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA).
Expanding ACP’s Global Initiatives
Dr. Aljurf has been instrumental in ACP’s global initiatives, particularly in the Middle East. He established the ACP Saudi Arabia Chapter, expanding the organization’s presence in the region. His dedication earned him Mastership (MACP), ACP’s highest honor.
For the third consecutive year, KFSHRC ranks first in the Middle East and Africa among academic medical centers. It is also the 15th globally. Recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, KFSHRC appeared in Newsweek’s World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025.
