Saudi Deputy Defense Minister: Discussion with Pompeo highlighted efforts to maintain stability
Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman said in a Tweet on Tuesday that he met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and discussed with him events in the region and efforts to maintain stability.
“I had the pleasure of meeting His Excellency US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. During the meeting, the developments of events in the region were reviewed, as well as what could be done to preserve security, peace and stability at the regional and international levels,” said Khalid bin Salman.
This meeting came against the backdrop of recent developments following the US strikes in Iraq, the last of which targeted the Iranian “Quds” Corps commander Qassem Soleimani and the deputy head of the “Popular Mobilization” Iraqi Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis and their companions near Baghdad International Airport.
Earlier, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan stated that his country does not wish to see any further escalation of tension in the region at a very dangerous moment.
Bin Farhan added in a press conference in Riyadh that the Kingdom is keen to avoid any escalation of the situation in the region, adding that attention should be paid to the risks to global security and not only the security of the region.
He expressed the Kingdom’s hope that all parties take the necessary steps to prevent further escalation and any provocation.
