Saudi Arabia Strengthens Energy Projects with Egypt

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has met with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The ministers discussed the bilateral cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the field of oil and gas, electricity, renewable energy, and hydrogen.

They also delved into the mechanisms that can achieve the visions and ambitious goals of the Saudi-Egyptian partnership.

Furthermore, the ministers tackled the mutual projects, notably the Egyptian-Saudi power linkage project that basically aimed at boosting the stability of the electrical supply between the two countries.

The project links the two largest electrical networks in the region and constitutes the foundation for a future Arab power grid connection. Furthermore, it will empower both countries to exchange up to 3,000 MW of electricity.

It consists of three high-voltage transformer stations: two in Saudi Arabia (in Madinah and Tabuk) and one in Egypt (in Badr City, east of Cairo). It has a production capacity of approximately 3,000 MW. Moreover, the maximum capacity of the project will be completed by the beginning of 2026.

“The project aims to exploit the difference in the peak load times between the two countries’ networks, including maximizing the benefit from the generation capabilities in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, reducing fuel consumption rates, and economical operation of the network,” Esmat explained.
