Saudi Arabia has been committed to providing developing countries with several polio eradication projects.
The Kingdom has implemented 15 projects totaling $39.114 million in various countries around the world.
Through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), Saudi Arabia’s health sector has executed 10 projects totaling $11.314 million in numerous countries. They include Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, Pakistan, the Central African Republic, Congo, and Guinea.
Moreover, the Kingdom has provided more than $600 million to protect 370 million children annually from polio.
In collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Saudi Arabia has singled out millions of people from poverty across 33 member countries of the Islamic Development Bank.
Crucially, this funding has allocated $500 million over five years to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, which provides polio vaccines in the most vulnerable areas.
Similarly, the Kingdom has made bold strides to combat measles and polio in other countries.
It provided $57.67 million through partnerships with UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).
In addition to this, the Kingdom implemented polio and measles eradication projects in several countries, with a total investment of $15 million, including $11.14 million spent on projects executed by KSrelief.
In 2016, KSrelief also provided 15,000 doses of meningitis vaccines and 15,000 doses of polio vaccines to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Interestingly, the Kingdom observes the World Polio Day on October 24 each year, celebrating its intensifying efforts to eradicate polio and alleviate its severe impact on individuals and communities.
