Saudi Arabia condemns terrorist attack on Djiboutian security forces
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned and denounced a terrorist attack on Djiboutian security forces by a terrorist group, which resulted in the death and injury of some Djiboutian soldiers.
In a statement carried out by (SPA) the Saudi Press Agency, the ministry affirmed the Kingdom’s total rejection of all forms of violence, terrorism, and extremism, emphasizing the Kingdom’s stand and solidarity with the government and people of Djibouti in this great calamity.
The Ministry of Defense in Djibouti announced the death of seven soldiers in an attack on an army barracks by a rebel group early Friday and launched a search operation to find the remaining six.
In a statement, the Ministry of Defense blamed the Armed Front for Unity and Democracy, which it described as a “terrorist group”, responsible for the attack that targeted a base in Garabitisan, north of the small country in the Horn of Africa.
“Although our soldiers defended themselves valiantly, this attack killed seven of our soldiers, wounded four, and left six. This gang is known for its reprehensible and criminal acts of intimidation and looting in remote areas of the country”. The Ministry of Defense said.
No new information was released Saturday from the authorities. The “Front for the Reunification and Democracy”, formed by the “Afar” ethnicity, launched a rebellion against the government in 1991, noting that it seeks to defend the interests of the “Afar” against members of the “Issa” ethnic group, which is another large group in the country.
The group later broke up. Although the front is affiliated with the government coalition that supports President Ismail Omar Guelleh, its armed wing still adheres to the armed resistance.
The “Front for the Reunification and Democracy” condemned the attack, which it described as “unjustified in the current context based on political pluralism.” “It is a terrorist act aimed at creating a climate of war and instability in our country,” It said in a statement.
IGAD Executive Director Workneh Gebeyehu condemned “in the strongest possible terms the cowardly criminal attack” and called on the perpetrators to face justice.
