Saudi Arabia Condemns Magdeburg Attack in Germany

Saudi Arabia expressed its condemnation of the attack that took place on Friday evening at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, central Germany.

In a statement, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Kingdom “expresses its condemnation of the incident that took place in a market in the city of Magdeburg in the Federal Republic of Germany in which a car plowed into crowds, resulting in the death and injury of a number of people.”

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia reiterated its firm position against violence. The statement also expressed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the German people and the families of the victims.

The Kingdom “affirms its position in rejecting violence, and expresses its sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the German government, wishing the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement said.

On Friday evening, a car rammed into a busy Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing at least two people and injuring more than 60 others, reported the Associated Press (AP).

The German authorities called the incident a “deliberate attack.” The suspect was arrested shortly after. Speaking to reporters, the premier of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, said: “As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator, so that as far as we know there is no further danger to the city.”

Magdeburg is the capital city of Saxony-Anhalt state, west of Berlin. It is home to about 240,000 residents. After the attack, several other German towns cancelled their weekend Christmas markets out of precaution and in solidarity with Magdeburg.
