Rising Death Toll in Gaza: Rafah Residents Bear the Brunt
The conflict in Gaza continues to escalate. Specifically, Israel has intensified its bombardment of the southern city of Rafah. Subsequently, the death toll across the devastated Palestinian strip has risen to 29,313, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Rafah’s Plight
Rafah, which is on the southernmost fringe of the enclave close to the boundary with Egypt, houses an estimated 1.5 million people. Most of these residents have fled their homes further north to escape Israel’s military onslaught. Simultaneously, Israel has announced preparations for a ground assault on Rafah, sparking concerns for civilian lives.
Military Movements In Rafah Are Intensifying
Residents reported that Israeli tanks advanced west from Khan Younis into Al-Mawasi, an area previously considered relatively safe. These tanks reached the coastal road, effectively isolating Khan Younis and Rafah from the rest of the strip, before retreating after a few hours.
The Human Cost
The human cost of the conflict is tragically evident in Rafah. Residents reported several airstrikes and large explosions in the city. The aftermath of a strike on the home of the Al-Noor family in Rafah was captured on film, showing the home reduced to rubble and more than a dozen bodies wrapped in shrouds.
International Response
The international response to the crisis has been mixed. The United States, a staunch ally of Israel, vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. This action sparked anger among the residents of Gaza.
Ongoing Conflict
The conflict continues to rage, with residents of Deir Al-Balah in central Gaza and Khan Younis also reporting overnight strikes and deaths. Since the start of the war on Oct. 7, injuries in Gaza have totaled 69,333 people, and deaths have reached 29,313.
The war, triggered by Hamas militants who attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, has led to a devastating air and ground assault on Gaza by Israel.
This has displaced most of the population of 2.3 million, caused widespread hunger, and laid waste to much of the territory. The international community needs to find a peaceful resolution to this conflict and prevent further loss of life.
