Rare Desert Lizard Spotted in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders

A rare lizard species, known as Savigny’s agama (Trapelus savignii), was spotted in Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region, according to Saudi News Agency (SPA). The reptile’s appearance in the Arar desert aligns with the area’s rich plant life and conservation efforts, which provide a favorable environment.

Diverse Ecosystem of Northern Borders

Saudi Arabia’s Northern Borders region boasts diverse ecosystems, thanks to its vast landscape and unique geography. These factors support a variety of wildlife, contributing to ecological balance and biodiversity. This habitat serves as a natural haven for many species, including rare desert reptiles.

Key Characteristics of Savigny’s Agama

Adnan Khalifta, a wildlife enthusiast and member of the Aman Environmental Society, described the lizard as medium-sized with a broad, triangular head, flat body, and long tail. The agama features spiky scales on its back and head and is active during the day. It typically blends with its sandy surroundings and is especially adapted to rocky terrains and gravel plains.

Distinctive Coloration During Mating Season

While both genders blend into the desert environment, males display striking blue hues along the head, neck, and sides during mating season. This vibrant coloration helps attract females, who lack the blue markings.

The lizard feeds on insects and invertebrates and finds refuge from desert heat by climbing shrubs and rocks. Its adaptability to harsh desert conditions and unique appearance make it a remarkable species in Saudi Arabia’s diverse wildlife.
