Mohamed Kanno sparked the recovery with a 30th-minute goal, while Musab Al-Juwayr equalized from the penalty spot before the hour mark. Abdullah Hamdan sealed the win with a 93rd-minute strike, keeping Saudi Arabia’s qualification hopes alive.
Consequently, Saudi Arabia sit second in Group B with three points, tied with Iraq but ahead on goal difference. Bahrain, with six points, have already secured their semifinal spot, leaving the Green Falcons and Iraq battling for the remaining slot.
Injury Woes for Saudi Arabia
Injuries have severely impacted Saudi Arabia ahead and during the 26th edition of the Gulf Cup, forcing multiple players to withdraw before the tournament began. Key absentees include Saleh Al-Shehri, Abdulelah Al-Amri, Abdullah Al-Khaibari, and Firas Al-Buraikan, weakening the team significantly.
Piling more woes on the Green Falcons, left-back Yasser Al-Shahrani suffered a joint injury that forced him to miss the win over Yemen.
Iraq Seek Redemption
On the other hand, Iraq are looking to pick themselves up from a 2-0 loss to Bahrain in its last encounter despite starting the tournament on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Yemen.
The Lions of Mesopotamia have a slight advantage in their head-to-head record, claiming 18 wins in their previous 36 encounters across all competitions. At the same time, the Green Falcons secured 11 victories and 7 ended in draws. Their most recent encounter dates back to January 2023, with Iraq claiming a 2-0 victory in the 25th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup group stage.
