Modi Shortens Saudi Trip After Deadly Kashmir Attack

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his Saudi Arabia visit after a deadly terror attack in Kashmir. Modi was in Jeddah for a two-day visit to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

Gunmen on Tuesday opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, killing 26 people. The attack, one of the deadliest in recent times, targeted civilians in the scenic Himalayan region. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility.

Modi’s Saudi Visit

Modi landed in Jeddah on Tuesday afternoon for his third visit to Saudi Arabia. He held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, focusing on energy, health, and space cooperation. Both leaders agreed to expedite work on the IMEC, a strategic project aimed at bolstering regional integration and connectivity.

The visit underscored the strong ties between India and Saudi Arabia. The countries signed four pacts, including agreements on space and health cooperation. The Crown Prince offered condolences and support to Modi following the Kashmir attack.

IMEEC Project

The IMEC, proposed at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023, aims to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It seeks to develop a seamless infrastructure of ports, railways, roads, sea lines, and pipelines to enhance trade among India, the Arabian Peninsula, the Mediterranean region, and Europe.

Modi cut short his visit and returned to Delhi on Wednesday morning as he held an emergency meeting with national security advisors upon his arrival to discuss the situation in Kashmir. The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region.

World leaders, including US President Donald Trump and EU chief Ursula Von der Leyen, condemned the attack. They expressed solidarity with India and called for a united front against terrorism.

The Kashmir terror attack cast a shadow over Modi’s Saudi visit, highlighting the urgent need for regional cooperation and security. The IMEC project, a key focus of the visit, offers a strategic path forward for economic integration and stability.

Saudi-India ties remain robust, with joint projects advancing despite crises. Global allies continue rallying against terrorism, reinforcing collaborative security efforts.
