The participation of the Saudi Health Minister, Fahd Al-Jalajel , in Budget Forum 2024 highlighted significant health sector accomplishments.
Key Achievements in 2023
In the forum’s second session, Al-Jalajel outlined the health sector’s 2023 achievements and 2024 goals. He highlighted that healthcare coverage in Saudi Arabia surpassed the 2023 target, reaching 94%.
Major contributions to this success came from the Jazan Specialty Hospital and Jeddah Maternity and Children’s Hospital which offer the most intensive care beds for newborns in the region.
These projects have cut patient transfers from the region by 66% since 2016.
Technological Advancements
Al-Jalajel introduced the addition of proton therapy to the Kingdom’s health system, a pioneering move in the region. This advanced treatment uses precise radiation to target cancer cells while sparing adjacent organs.
This treatment makes it an optimal choice for pediatric cases and tumors in sensitive areas.
Modern Care Model
The minister of health highlighted the modern, comprehensive care model for prevention and health services.
70% of diabetic patients effectively manage their condition. This model is being implemented across Saudi Arabia.
Impact of Health Policies
Firstly, the health minister emphasized health policies’ role in decreasing chronic disease deaths. Secondly, these policies have effectively reduced fatalities from 600 to 500 per 100,000. Lastly, the aim is to further reduce this figure to 400.
Background of Fahad Al-Jalajel
Fahd Al-Jalajel, born in 1978, has a wide background in government service, and has more than 25 years of experience. Bachelor’s degree in computer science from King Saud University
He also received a master’s degree from St. Joseph’s University in Pennsylvania.
His career includes pivotal roles in the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Health. Its important contributions include leading several strategic, planning and development initiatives across these ministries.
