Macron Urges Emergency UN Security Council Meeting Over US-Israel Strikes on Iran
French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday urged the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency meeting, warning that the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran threatens international peace and security, according to Reuters.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on Saturday, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.
In response, Iran launched a counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.
In separate phone calls, Macron spoke with leaders of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and the President of the autonomous region of Kurdistan.
“The current escalation is dangerous for everyone. It must stop. The Iranian regime must understand that it now has no other option but to engage in good-faith negotiations to end its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its actions to destabilize the region,” Macron said.
He also noted that France stands prepared to mobilize all necessary resources to safeguard its closest partners at their request.
Macron added that the Iranian people must have the right to shape their own future in freedom.
“The massacres perpetrated by the Islamic regime discredit it and necessitate that the people be given a voice. The sooner the better,” he added.
US President Donald Trump described today’s strikes as essential measures to put an end to a security threat to Washington, while providing Iranians with a chance to challenge their rulers.
