KFSHRC Achieves World’s First Robotic-Assisted Artificial Heart Pump Implantation

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has achieved a historic medical breakthrough by performing the world’s first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump, the HeartMate 3 by Abbott. This revolutionary procedure represents a major leap forward in medical technology and patient care.

The groundbreaking surgery was conducted on a 35-year-old patient who had been hospitalized for 120 days due to advanced heart failure, which had also compromised his kidney and lung functions. Following the innovative procedure, the patient is now on a promising path to recovery, with hopes of reuniting with his family soon.

The operation was led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, head of cardiac surgery and director of KFSHRC’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program. Notably, the patient required only four days in the intensive care unit—a remarkable improvement compared to the 26-day average for similar surgeries performed using traditional methods. His overall recovery time is also projected to be significantly shorter, with discharge expected within 10 days instead of the conventional 63 days.
Dr. Khaliel highlighted the precision and safety of robotic-assisted surgery, stating that the patient experienced no infections or bleeding during or after the procedure. “The minimal scarring amazed the patient and showcased the advanced capabilities of robotic technology,” he remarked.

This achievement adds to KFSHRC’s distinguished history of medical milestones, including the world’s first fully robotic heart and liver transplants. These accomplishments reflect KFSHRC’s dedication to cutting-edge innovation and reinforce its reputation as a global leader in specialized healthcare.
