Saudi Arabia Conducts World’s First Robotic-Assisted Artificial Heart Pump Implantation

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) has achieved a remarkable milestone through the successful performance of the world’s first robotic-assisted implantation of an artificial heart pump (HeartMate 3) by Abbott.
The surgery marked a significant breakthrough in medical technology and patient care, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
The 35-year-old patient has suffered an advanced heart failure and consequently he had been hospitalized for 120 days.
Crucially, the heart failure has caused function deterioration in kidney and lungs.
Through a highly experienced robotic surgery team led by Dr. Feras Khaliel, head of cardiac surgery and director of the hospital’s Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Program, this global precedence has fulfilled a balance between bold innovation and strict safety measures.
Fortunately, the patient spent only four days in the intensive care unit compared to the 26-day average for similar procedures performed with traditional surgical methods.
Furthermore, recovery time is also projected to be significantly decreased. Meanwhile, discharge is anticipated to take 10 days instead of the usual 63 days for conventional interventions.
Commenting on this medical innovation, Dr. Khaliel stressed the safety of robotic-assisted surgery, emphasizing that the patient had no infections or bleeding during or after the operation.
“The patient was astonished when he woke up and found few scars after the surgery,” he added.
Prestigious Medical Destination
Interestingly, this new success has strengthened the KFSHRC’s position as a global reference in the robotic surgeries.
A few months ago, the centre successfully conducted the world’s first complete natural heart transplant through the use of an advanced robot.
Consequently, the KFSHRC has made another bold stride by transplanting the world’s first liver using a robot. Therefore, theses successive achievements have mirrored the hospital’s commitment to providing innovative medical solutions.
Furthermore, they underscore KFSHRC’s dedication to leading medical innovation and further boosting its status as a prestigious destination in specialized healthcare.
