Jeddah, a city steeped in history, has recently unveiled its ancient treasures, shedding light on its rich Islamic heritage.
Through the “Historical Jeddah” program, in collaboration with the Heritage Authority in Saudi Arabia, a significant archaeological breakthrough has been made.
Unearthing Ancient Relics
Approximately 25,000 archaeological items have been unearthed, providing insights into the Islamic civilization spanning back to the 7th and 8th centuries AD.
Sites of Significance
Among the notable sites are the Mosque of Uthman ibn Affan, the Shuna Archaeological Site, and sections of the eastern trench and the northern wall. These sites have been meticulously excavated as part of the Antiquities Project under the auspices of the Historical Jeddah program.
Diverse Artefacts
The excavation efforts, commencing in November 2020, have yielded a diverse array of artifacts. These include pottery, shells, metals, construction materials, and animal bones, providing a glimpse into various aspects of daily life during ancient times.
Insights from Mosque of Uthman ibn Affan
Studies conducted at the Mosque of Uthman ibn Affan have revealed artifacts dating back to the early Islamic centuries. Additionally, among these discoveries are a range of ceramic vessels and high-quality porcelain pieces.
Revelations at Shuna Archaeological Site
The Shuna Archaeological Site has offered significant insights into Jeddah’s architectural evolution. Moreover, the remains found here date back to at least the 13th Islamic century, with evidence suggesting even earlier settlements from the 10th Islamic century.
Discoveries at Kaddah Site
Excavations at the Kaddah Site, also known as Bab Makkah, have unearthed sections of the eastern trench.
Consequently, the discoveries in Jeddah underscore the city’s importance as a hub of Islamic civilization. Through these archaeological findings, researchers and historians gain valuable insights into the cultural, economic, and social dynamics of ancient Jeddah, enriching our understanding of its past.
