This development comes as part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the architectural aesthetic and capacity of the Grand Mosque.
Installation of the Final Crescent
The General Authority for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque undertook the installation of crescents on the minarets of the Grand Mosque, with the 13th and final crescent recently being installed on the minaret of Bab Al-Fath. This marked the completion of a phase in the ambitious project aimed at building man-made crescents on the minarets of the two Holy Mosques.
The crescents, which are more than 9 meters tall with a base width of 2 meters, are fabricated from carbon fiber and adorned with engraved glass. They possess iron internal structures to ensure longevity and stability. Specialized equipment was utilized to carry out the engineering works required for the installation
Architectural Expansion
The installation of the final crescent is part of a major building expansion program at the holy site. This expansion features architectural designs that include high ceilings, spacious terraces covered with marble and engraved glass, and arabesque lines inspired by Qur’anic texts.
Intricate patterns and geometric motifs have been extensively used to embellish walls, domes, and other architectural elements, embodying a pure architectural style and enhancing the overall aesthetic of the Grand Mosque4.
Significance and Future Endeavors
The installation of man-made crescents on all the minarets not only adds to the visual appeal but is a testament to the ongoing efforts to preserve and enhance the historical and religious significance of the Grand Mosque.
As Saudi Arabia continues to invest in the modernization and expansion of its religious sites, the completion of this project phase resonates with the broader vision of accommodating more worshippers and providing a spiritually enriching experience.
