The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) unveiled that Jeddah recorded 135 millimeters of rain on December 7, marking the governorate’s second-heaviest rainfall in recent years, according to the Saudi Gazette.
Jeddah recorded the highest rainfall on November 24, 2022, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the southern part of the city, with approximately 179 millimeters.
This amount exceeded previous records of 90 millimeters in 2009 and 111 millimeters in 2011.
Interestingly, this extreme rainfall stands as a testament to the effectiveness of the flood drainage projects carried out by the Makkah Region Emirate in Jeddah.
The permanent rainwater and flood drainage initiatives feature eight major projects, such as the construction of five primary dams along with their auxiliary structures.
The projects also include dedicated spillways and extensive drainage channels.
Moreover, the authorities strategically developed access roads and established major dams such as Wadi Ghaya, Umm Hablain, Wadi Daghbaj, Wadi Buraiman, and Wadi Ghulail.
The projects also involve expanding the existing rainwater drainage channels, including the northern, southern, and eastern channels, while constructing a new drainage channel adjacent to King Abdulaziz International Airport.
