WeBuild to Build Dams for Trojena Lake in Neom

The Italian company, WeBuild, has won a contract valued at $4.7 billion (17.62 billion Riyals). The contract includes building dams for the creation of an artificial lake in the mountainous resort called Trojena Lake in Neom, northwest Saudi Arabia, reported The Saudi Post.

Destination for Mountain Tourism

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Neom board, announced in March 2022 the establishment of Trojena Lake in Neom. It is intended to be a global destination for mountain tourism within Neom, as part of Neom’s plan and strategy to contribute to the support and development of the tourism sector in the region.

Design, Scale of Trojina Dams

In a statement, the company mentioned that it will construct three dams to create a 2.8-kilometer-long Trojena Lake in Neom. It is part of the “Vision 2030” economic diversification program in the Kingdom. According to the statement, the company will build three dams to form a freshwater lake for the ski resort, in addition to a series of related innovative works. More than 10,000 people will participate in the construction process.

The main dam in the Trojena project will be a striking structure, reaching 145 meters in height and stretching 475 meters in length. Constructed with 2.7 million cubic meters of roller compact concrete (RCC), the dam is a testament to engineering prowess. The project also includes an innovative kidney-shaped dam, set to form an underwater island.

This dam will stand 38 meters tall and 700 meters long. It will be connected to  Lake Village via an underwater tunnel. Additionally, there’s another key dam, 65 meters high and 490 meters long, built with 4.15 million cubic meters of rockfill.
