Farasan Islands Named Saudi Arabia’s 1st Ramsar-Registered Marine Reserve

The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) has announced that the Farasan Islands Reserve has been added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, making it the first marine reserve in Saudi Arabia to receive this international designation.

 

This milestone underscores the Kingdom’s growing commitment to protecting ecosystems, preserving natural resources, enhancing biodiversity, and strengthening its role in global environmental agreements—key objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.

The listing comes one year after Saudi Arabia, represented by the NCW, joined the Ramsar Convention in 2024. It also reflects the Kingdom’s dedication to conserving biodiversity, restoring sensitive habitats, and contributing to worldwide efforts to protect coastal and terrestrial ecosystems.

NCW CEO Dr. Mohammad Qurban described the designation as a strategic achievement for the Kingdom, highlighting progress in wetland protection and migratory waterbird conservation in line with international standards.
