Iran’s New Leader Dismisses De-escalation Until US, Israel “Brought to Their Knees”

Iran’s newly appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has firmly rejected all de-escalation proposals conveyed by intermediaries, insisting that Washington and Tel Aviv must first be “brought to their knees.” A senior Iranian official disclosed this stance to Reuters on Tuesday, marking a sharp escalation in rhetoric just weeks into the US-Israeli conflict.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who assumed leadership following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, adopted an uncompromising position during his first foreign policy session. “The new leader’s tone was very tough and serious,” the official stated, though it remains unclear whether he attended in person or via remote means. The session underscored Iran’s refusal to engage in peace talks until its adversaries meet his demands.

Two intermediary nations had reportedly approached Iran’s Foreign Ministry with proposals aimed at reducing tensions or securing a ceasefire with the United States. However, the senior official declined to disclose further details about the intermediaries or the nature of the proposals.

Supreme Leader’s Ultimatum: No Peace Without Surrender

In a blunt response, Mojtaba Khamenei declared, “It is not the right time for peace until the United States and Israel are brought to their knees, accept defeat, and pay compensation.” His words carry immense weight, as the Supreme Leader holds absolute authority over all state matters in the Islamic Republic.

Since his selection over a week ago, no new images of the new leader have surfaced. Some Iranian officials claim he sustained minor injuries in the strikes that killed his father, while US sources suggest his injuries were far more severe.

The US-Israeli offensive against Iran, now in its third week, has already claimed over 2,000 lives, with no resolution in sight. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global chokepoint, remains largely inaccessible, further straining energy markets and fueling inflation fears.

In his inaugural public address, delivered via state television last week, the new Supreme Leader reiterated his defiance. “The Strait of Hormuz should stay closed as a tool of pressure on Iran’s enemies,” he declared, signaling Tehran’s willingness to escalate economic and military pressure.

Trump Administration Rejects Allied Diplomatic Efforts

Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on 14 March that the Trump administration dismissed proposals from Middle Eastern allies to initiate negotiations aimed at ending the war. The rejection underscores the widening rift between the US and its regional partners over how to address the escalating crisis.

As tensions continue to rise, the international community watches closely, uncertain whether diplomacy can avert further devastation, or if Iran’s new leadership will double down on confrontation.
