A senior US counterterrorism official resigned on Tuesday to protest the ongoing military conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran.
Joseph Kent, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, stated that the Islamic Republic posed no imminent threat to the United States. Consequently, he became the first high-ranking official to leave the administration over this specific military engagement.
In a formal resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump, Kent expressed his inability to remain in his current position. “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran,” wrote Kent, a former Green Beret who completed multiple combat tours.
Furthermore, he challenged the narrative surrounding the necessity of the conflict. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent asserted.
Allegations of Misinformation
Kent specifically highlighted a shift in the administration’s foreign policy. He argued that the President previously viewed Middle Eastern wars as traps that depleted American wealth and lives. However, he claims that outside influences altered this stance.
“Early in this administration, high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation campaign,” Kent stated. He argued this campaign undermined the “America First” platform and manufactured pro-war sentiments.
According to Kent, this “echo chamber” served to deceive the executive branch into believing a swift victory was possible. He compared the current strategy to previous foreign policy failures.
“This was a lie and is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands of our best men and women,” Kent said.
Protecting the Next Generation
The former director emphasized that the human cost of the war outweighs any perceived geopolitical gains. Therefore, he chose to step down rather than oversee the continued deployment of American troops. “I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives,” he concluded.
The White House has not yet issued an official response regarding Kent’s departure or his specific allegations regarding the war’s origins.
