In a rare direct contact between Iran and the United Kingdom, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and her Iranian Counterpart Abbas Araqchi agreed to boost mutual understanding, according to AFP.
During a phone call, both ministers underscored the need to go on in consultations at several levels to strengthen “mutual understanding and pursue issues of mutual interest.”
Cooper also stressed the significance of reaching a diplomatic solution on Tehran’s nuclear program and raised a number of other issues.
One of these issues is the case of Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a British couple who have been detained in Iran for nearly a year on espionage-related allegations, a source in London reported.
Meanwhile, Araqchi sharply criticized the three European countries’ move toward the Iranian nuclear issue, describing it as an “irresponsible approach.”
Iran and the US held five rounds of nuclear talks before Israel targeted Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13.
However, these talks faced key stumbling blocks such as uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, a step met with utter rejection by European powers which claimed that Tehran is enriching uranium for unpeaceful purposes.
On September 28, the E3_ Britain, France, and Germany_ reimposed sanctions on Tehran after they claimed that Iran has violated a 2015 deal aiming at halting it from developing a nuclear weapon.
