GASTAT: Dates Secure Highest Self-Sufficiency Rate with 119% in 2023

The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) has published 2023 Saudi Arabia’s Food Security Statistics Bulletin, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

Interestingly, dates secured the highest self-sufficiency rate among plant-based products with 119% rate during 2023.

Dates hold a special place in Saudi Arabia as an iconic symbol of hospitality across the Kingdom.

Recently, the Kingdom has taken several steps to elevate the dates industry.

In May, the National Center for Palms and Dates (NCPD) has organized a visit to Alibaba Group’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China to promote the Saudi dates industry in global markets.

With the participation of 23 Saudi companies, the visit showcased Saudi premium dates and their products to Chinese food industry companies.

The occasion also highlighted several meetings between Saudi and Chinese companies aimed at facilitating logistical, legal, marketing, and packaging operations.

According to the bulletin, figs and eggplants recorded 107% for each, while cucumber recorded 102% rate and zucchini stood at 100% rate.

Furthermore, potatoes and tomatoes recorded self-sufficiency rates of 87% and 76%, respectively, while onions reached 51%, GASTAT reported.

The bulletin also indicates that shrimp secured the highest self-sufficiency rate among animal-based products in 2023, at 147%.

Consequently, dairy products stood at 129%, and table eggs recached 100%.

As for meat, poultry obtained a self-sufficiency rate of 71%, and red meat recorded 61%. Meanwhile, fish achieved a self-sufficiency rate of 48%.
