Finalizing Restoration of 56 Historic Jeddah Buildings
The Ministry of Culture, represented by the Jeddah Historical Program, declared the completion of works in the project to reinforce and rescue (56) buildings in Historic Jeddah. Mohamed bin Salman’s Crown Prince funds contributed 50 million Saudi Riyals. These funds supported projects aimed at preserving the Kingdom’s historical and civilizational heritage.
Furthermore, the project fits within the Crown Prince’s desire to maintain and restore ancient landmarks. This initiative aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. The vision aims to represent the breadth of the Kingdom’s Arab and Islamic cultures.
The project’s goal is to draw attention to the numerous historical landmarks found in the Historic Jeddah District. These landmarks include more than 600 historic buildings, 36 historical mosques, five major historical markets, as well as ancient squares and corridors. Historic Jeddah also includes locations with significant historical significance, like the ancient waterfront. This landmark served as a major route for Hajj pilgrims. These structures will be reconstructed to narrate the profound tale of the Hajj from the inception of Islam till now, captivating visitors with its historical significance.
Besides, the Crown Prince has directed the implementation of the project to strengthen and rescue historic Jeddah buildings by five specialized Saudi companies. These companies carried out the work and conducted studies under the supervision of technicians with experience in historical buildings.
The project execution adhered to the distinctive design and urban layout of the Historic Jeddah District, along with its unique architectural features. Some of these buildings, owned by Jeddah families, boast archaeological landmarks dating back 500 years.
Previously, the Crown Prince announced in 2021 the launch of the “Reviving Historic Jeddah” project. This project also aims to develop the living environment in the area, transforming it into a hub for business and cultural projects, and a primary destination for entrepreneurs.
This is to be achieved through various avenues including infrastructure and service improvements, development of the natural and environmental landscape, enhancing quality of life, and urban aspects. The objective is to transform “Historic Jeddah” into an inspirational site in the region. This will serve as a global showcase for the Kingdom, utilizing its heritage sites, cultural elements, and unique urban features. The Kingdom aims also to create a vibrant living space equipped with creative opportunities for both its residents and visitors.
