The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh as a Category 2 center under UNESCO’s auspices.
This approval was granted during UNESCO’s 42nd General Conference.
Saudi Arabia’s Commitment
This achievement aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing support for UNESCO’s mission to enhance global well-being.
It also reaffirms the nation’s efforts in the field of artificial intelligence to use it in the interest of the whole world.
The center will support the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s priorities.
Adoption of AI Ethics
Saudi Arabia was among the first to adopt UNESCO’s AI ethics recommendations, established in November 2021 with 193 participating countries.
In September 2022, SDAIA issued AI ethics principles during the second edition of the Global Artificial Intelligence Summit.
Consequently, on July 25, 2023, the Saudi Cabinet approved the establishment of the International Center for AI Research and Ethics in Riyadh, with financial and administrative independence. The center is headquartered in Riyadh.
Center’s Focus Areas
The center will concentrate on four key areas: supporting AI research and development, raising awareness of AI ethics, providing AI policy recommendations, and contributing to global AI-related initiatives.
