Ruba Mohammed Al-Masri has made history as Saudi Arabia’s first female fencer appointed as a student sports ambassador to the International University Sport Federation (FISU). This significant appointment underscores the Kingdom’s growing commitment to empowering female athletes.
Promoting University Sports
The FISU Student Ambassador program aims to promote university sports development and support volunteer programs in the ambassadors’ home countries. Al-Masri expressed pride in her new role, viewing it as a turning point for Saudi sports.
“This success is not just an individual accomplishment. It reflects Saudi Arabia’s tremendous efforts to support women’s sports and empower youth,” she said. “Seeing a Saudi girl shine on the international stage is a dream come true, opening new doors for young talents.”
Recognition of Achievement
Princess Reema bint Bandar, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the US, acknowledged Al-Masri’s achievement, citing it as an example of the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing women in sports. She noted how women’s fencing has progressed since Lubna Al-Omair’s participation in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

For Al-Masri, Princess Reema’s recognition was a powerful validation. “It felt like a validation of all the hard work and sacrifices I made as a female athlete,” she said.
Family Influence and Challenges
Al-Masri’s passion for fencing was inspired by her father, a former Arab champion. “Growing up surrounded by his memorabilia encouraged me to follow in his footsteps,” she explained. The initiatives led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to empower women in sports also motivated her.
Despite facing challenges like finding training facilities and balancing academics, Al-Masri persevered. “I’m proud to have built a name for myself while pursuing a double major in law and aesthetic specialization,” she said.
Inspiring Future Generations
As a student-athlete ambassador, Al-Masri hopes to inspire young women to pursue their passions. “I aim to help them balance sports with their educational and personal lives,” she said.
One of her defining moments came when she won the first Saudi bronze medal at the Under-23 European Championships in 2023. This marked a major achievement for Saudi fencers on the European stage.
Looking Ahead
Al-Masri looks forward to contributing to the FISU Student Ambassadors Program in the upcoming 2024/25 season. She plans to collaborate on group proposals, participate in educational webinars, and celebrate the International Day of University Sport.
She credited the Saudi University Sports Federation and her coach, Fawad Al-Nasiri, for their support throughout her journey. Their influence has motivated her to reach new heights.
Al-Masri’s advice to young Saudi girls is simple: “Embrace every opportunity and don’t shy away from challenges. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and friends, and believe in your potential to achieve greatness in sports.”
