Denmark summoned the US charge d’affaires for urgent talks on Wednesday, following reports of attempted interference in Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory. US President Donald Trump has expressed a strong interest in Greenland, emphasizing its strategic location and resource wealth.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has repeatedly stated that the United States needs Greenland for security reasons, not ruling out the use of force to secure control over the island. This stance raises concerns among Danish officials and Greenland’s residents.
Greenland’s Desire for Independence
A January opinion poll revealed that the vast majority of Greenland’s 57,000 residents want independence from Denmark. However, they do not wish to become part of the United States. This sentiment highlights the complex relationship between Greenland, Denmark, and the US.
Danish public television reported on Wednesday that at least three US officials close to Trump have recently visited Greenland. These officials allegedly sought information on past issues that have strained relations between Greenland and Denmark. Notable topics include the forced removal of Greenlandic children from their families and a forced contraception scandal.
Denmark’s Firm Stance on Foreign Interference
Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen addressed the situation in a statement to AFP, acknowledging that foreign actors continue to show interest in Greenland and its position within the Kingdom of Denmark. “It is therefore not surprising if we experience outside attempts to influence the future of the Kingdom in the time ahead,” he stated.
Rasmussen firmly declared, “Any attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of the kingdom will of course be unacceptable.” He added that he had instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the US charge d’affaires for a meeting. This diplomatic move underscores Denmark’s commitment to safeguarding its territory and the autonomy of Greenland.
