Coronavirus: the US urges report to know its origin
US President Joe Biden ordered intelligence agencies to prepare a report on the coronavirus origin. Currently, there is a controversy over its beginning and whether the virus had leaked from a laboratory in China.
Biden asked the US intelligence community to redouble their efforts and submit a report within 90 days.
Officials at the Chinese Embassy in Washington warned against politicizing measures to determine the virus origin.
The coronavirus was detected for the first time in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. Since the announcement of its discovery, the number of injuries has reached more than 168 million, and 3.5 million deaths have been recorded worldwide.
The Chinese authorities have linked the first cases of the virus to a seafood market in Wuhan. Scientists believe it passed from animals to humans.
According to recent reports in the American media, there is mounting proof of the virus leaking from a Chinese laboratory. China condemned these reports and indicated that the virus might have spread from an American laboratory.
Joe Biden’s administration acknowledged that the US intelligence agencies are divided, as some believe the virus appeared for the first time in a laboratory, and there are those who see that it passed from an animal to a human.
The hypothesis that the virus comes from a Chinese laboratory is still doubtful. However, Biden has promised a thorough investigation. If the US discovers clear evidence towards this possibility, it might be a true test of US-China ties for years to come.
The President has now asked the agencies to redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information that can bring us closer to a conclusion, requesting Congress to remain fully informed of the matter.
