Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged the Gulf Cooperation Council to finalize long-running negotiations on a free trade agreement with Beijing, according to Reuters.
Free Trade Agreement
Wang warned that rising protectionism and unilateralism are putting global free trade “under attack.”
Wang is on a three-nation tour in the Middle East that began in the United Arab Emirates on December 12 and will conclude in Jordan on December 16.
After meeting with top Saudi Officials in Riyadh, China’s top diplomat held landmark talks with GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi in Riyadh on Sunday.
“The talks have lasted for more than 20 years, and conditions for all aspects are basically mature, it is time to make a final decision,” Wang said.
Pushing for Strong Relations with GCC
During a meeting with Albudaiwi, Wang noted that a successful FTA will serve as a “strong signal to the world about defending multilateralism.”
He also underscored China’s support for the bloc boosting its strategic autonomy and coordination, and fostering its integration process.
In this context, Wang also expressed China’s interest in solidifying economic, commercial, and investment cooperation with the GCC.
Closer Coordination with Saudi Arabia

In a separate meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, both ministers agreed to have deeper communication and closer coordination on regional and international issues.
Beijing also commended the Kingdom’s central role and diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East.
“(China) appreciates Saudi Arabia’s leading role and efforts to achieve regional and international security and stability,” the statement released on Monday said.
Moreover, Wang told his Saudi Counterpart that China has always considered Saudi Arabia as a “priority for Middle East diplomacy” and a significant partner in global diplomacy.

A statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry also noted that areas of Saudi-Chinese cooperation will include energy, investments, new energy and green transformation.
Interestingly, the talks featured the announcement of mutual visa exemption for diplomatic and special passport holders from both sides.
