Centre for Space Futures, University of Bologna Partner on Space Law, Policy

The Centre for Space Futures has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the University of Bologna to deepen collaboration in space law, regulatory frameworks, and related policy fields. The agreement reflects both institutions’ shared commitment to structured cooperation in areas of strategic importance to the evolving space sector.
The memorandum sets out a framework for joint research projects, professional education and training, internship opportunities, and broader capacity-building initiatives. It aims to strengthen the link between academic research and policy development while supporting governance approaches that respond to the rapidly changing landscape of space activities.

Through this partnership, the two institutions intend to advance rigorous legal scholarship alongside practical policy engagement.

Centre for Space Futures Managing Director Eng. Mishaal Ashemimry stated that the agreement strengthens the connection between academic expertise and applied policymaking in the space sector. She noted that collaboration with the University of Bologna will enhance specialized capabilities in space law and support informed responses to emerging regulatory challenges. She also emphasized that closer cooperation between research institutions and policymakers is essential to ensuring responsible and sustainable sector growth.

Prof. Federico Casolari, Head of the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Bologna, described the memorandum as an important milestone in expanding collaboration between academia and global policy institutions. Additionally, he highlighted that the partnership will create new opportunities for joint research, advanced training, and academic exchange in space governance. He added that stronger institutional cooperation is increasingly vital to addressing the complex legal and regulatory issues arising from the continued expansion of space activities.

Finally, the Centre for Space Futures is a global, impartial platform established in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Saudi Space Agency to support the development of the global space economy through policy recommendations, technological enablement, and cross-sector collaboration.
