Heriot-Watt University Dubai Hosts Second Edition of Sustainability Seminar

Heriot-Watt University Dubai successfully hosted the second edition of its Sustainability Seminar, titled “The Central Role of Strategic Partnerships in Achieving Sustainable Packaging Solutions.” The seminar brought together a distinguished group of academics, industry leaders, policymakers, humanitarian organization representatives, and students for a constructive dialogue focused on addressing packaging waste through collaboration and innovation.

Building on the success of the inaugural “Packaging for Sustainability” seminar in 2024, this year’s edition underscored the critical role of multi-sector partnerships in accelerating the transition to circular and sustainable packaging systems. Through keynote speeches, case studies, and interactive panel discussions, the seminar explored practical solutions for managing post-consumer waste, showcased emerging sustainable materials, and presented scalable models across commercial and humanitarian supply chains.

Commenting on the event, Dr. Matthew Sukumaran, Chief Operating Officer at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, stated, “The second edition of the Sustainability Seminar reflects our steadfast commitment to addressing complex environmental challenges through education, research, and constructive collaboration. Since 2024, this platform has transformed theoretical ideas into tangible initiatives by bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, humanitarian organizations, and our students. Strategic partnerships are pivotal in developing sustainable packaging solutions, and this initiative exemplifies how collective efforts can create a real and scalable impact.”

The guest of honor and keynote speaker, His Excellency Maher Al-Kaabi, Advisor to the Chairman and Independent Board Member of Alserkal Group, and member of the UAE Circular Economy Council, added, “Sustainable packaging cannot be addressed in isolation; it requires strategic partnerships that unite scientific research, industry, policymakers, and humanitarian entities to ensure innovation aligns with regulatory frameworks and scalability requirements. Heriot-Watt’s leadership in organizing this platform exemplifies the crucial role of academia in translating research into practical, circular solutions that support sustainability goals in the UAE while delivering long-term economic and environmental value.”

Challenges and Opportunities in Sustainable Packaging

The seminar featured a series of expert-led discussions addressing key challenges and opportunities in sustainable packaging, which explored post-consumer packaging waste, examining the complexities of collection, sorting, and recycling; new sustainable packaging materials and methods, including biodegradable and compostable alternatives; and innovative solutions from international markets, highlighting how to adapt global best practices to local and regional contexts. Collectively, the discussions emphasized the importance of policy alignment, industry innovation, and cross-border collaboration in delivering effective and economically viable packaging solutions.

A highlight of the seminar was the presentation of results from the second edition of the design competition, which encouraged Heriot-Watt University Dubai students to develop practical solutions for real sustainability challenges. This year’s competition focused on managing post-consumer waste at Expo City Dubai and developing sustainable packaging methods within humanitarian supply chains, in collaboration with partners including the Dubai Humanitarian Foundation and Othalo Organization. The qualifying student projects demonstrated how innovation, design thinking, and strategic partnerships can integrate to create a tangible environmental impact.

Through initiatives like the Sustainability Seminar, Heriot-Watt University continues to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable packaging practices and supporting the broader sustainability and circular economy goals of the UAE.
