The hurricane is expected to weaken after passing over Cuba as it moves northeast toward the Bahamas and Bermuda.

In Haiti, east of Cuba, residents have taken shelter in public buildings such as schools for protection, and the eye of the hurricane is not expected to pass directly over the country.
