
Hurricane Melissa, described as “catastrophic,” has made landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 hurricane, striking the country’s southeastern coast with winds reaching 120 miles per hour.
Residents in Jamaica, which was hit by the storm yesterday when it was still a Category 5 hurricane, are waiting for dawn to assess the extent of the damage.

The hurricane is expected to weaken after passing over Cuba as it moves northeast toward the Bahamas and Bermuda.
In Haiti, east of Cuba, residents have taken shelter in public buildings such as schools for protection, and the eye of the hurricane is not expected to pass directly over the country.
