Canada’s Carney to Visit India in March for Trade Pact Talks with Modi

Canadian official Victor Fedeli said on Monday that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to New Delhi in early March for a landmark meeting with his Indian Counterpart Narendra Modi to advance work on a framework for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, according to Reuters.

Carney is currently intensifying its efforts to diversify Canada’s alliances beyond its traditional reliance on the United States, its largest trading partner.

This drive comes in response to tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Moreover, the Canadian PM is also working to rebuild Canada’s relations with India, following a sharp downturn under his predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

In 2023, Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in the murdering of a Sikh separatist leader—a claim firmly denied by New Delhi.

Victor Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, said that Carney is expected to be in New Delhi on March 1–2.

In November, Modi and Carney agreed to launch talks on a comprehensive trade pact on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

The two leaders also seek to double bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030.

Since 2018, trade between Ontario and India has surged by 60%.

Indian companies such as HCL, Paytm, and Tata Consultancy Services have also established a strong presence in the province, according to Fedeli.
