Britain’s New Ambassador Says Saudi Arabia’s Progress Offers Lessons for UK
Britain’s newly appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Stephen Hitchen, said the UK is keen to learn from the Kingdom’s rapid development and its ability to blend modern technologies with deep-rooted traditions, according to Saudi Gazette.
In a video message shared in Arabic on X, Hitchen introduced himself to the Saudi public, underscoring that his mission is to “deepen and expand our modern partnership in education, health, investment, the economy, and strategic relations.”
“We also seek to learn from your achievements — particularly the remarkable pace of growth in your country and the way your deep-rooted values harmonize with modern technologies,” he added.
Hitchen and his family arrived in Riyadh last week, attending the Esports Cup and visiting Diriyah. He said they plan to travel widely across the Kingdom in the coming months, from Najran to Dammam, AlUla, and the Empty Quarter.
“My family and I have already experienced the famous Saudi hospitality, and we look forward to exploring your beautiful mountains, deserts, towns, and cities,” he added.
This month, Hitchen officially assumed his duties as Britain’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, following Neil Crompton. A seasoned diplomat with a long track record in the Middle East, Hitchen previously represented the UK as ambassador to Iraq between 2023 and 2025.
