China pushed back on Thursday against what it called “irresponsible remarks” after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleged that Chinese nationals are being recruited by Russia to fight in its war against Ukraine.
Zelensky stated that Ukrainian intelligence had identified 155 Chinese citizens aiding Russia’s military campaign on Wednesday. He also claimed that two Chinese soldiers had recently been captured by Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region.
When asked about these allegations, China’s foreign ministry urged all involved to avoid making “irresponsible comments.” Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said during a regular press briefing, “We advise the relevant parties to have a clear and objective understanding of China’s role.”
Calls for Peaceful Resolution
Moreover, without directly naming Ukraine or Zelensky, Lin reiterated Beijing’s stance as a neutral actor in the ongoing war, which is now in its third year. Western countries, however, have frequently accused China of indirectly supporting Russia through economic and diplomatic ties.
Zelensky, in his remarks, warned that the involvement of Chinese nationals represented a serious escalation. “The open participation of Chinese citizens in combat operations is a calculated move to widen the scope of the war,” he said. “Russia is dragging other nations into this conflict — and I believe they are now pulling China in as well.”
Lin responded by affirming that China instructs its citizens not to engage in foreign conflicts. “China has always required its nationals to stay clear of involvement in armed conflicts,” he said. “We are not a party to the Ukraine crisis. China remains a firm supporter and active advocate for a peaceful resolution.”
