Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has condemned the decision by the Israeli occupation’s ministerial committee to approve the construction of 19 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, describing it as a clear defiance of the international consensus rejecting settlement activity and a violation of international law, which deems such settlements illegal.
In a statement issued today, Aboul Gheit said that the continued expansion of illegal settlements is intended to obstruct the creation of a geographically contiguous Palestinian state and reflects the nature of the current Israeli government, which he described as being dominated by extremists and settlers.
He emphasized that settlement expansion cannot confer legitimacy under any circumstances. Aboul Gheit also underscored that violence carried out by extremist settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank amounts to terrorism, taking place under the supervision and protection of the occupying power’s official institutions.
