Amnesty Urges FIFA to Publish Review of Qatar World Cup workers’ Compensation- Reuters

Amnesty International urges FIFA to swiftly publish its review of compensation for workers affected by preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and respond positively to the findings.

Qatar faced pressure for its treatment of foreign workers in extreme conditions. Many raised concerns, but Qatar denied worker exploitation.

Amnesty said FIFA should publish and act on a review “assessing its human rights responsibilities” towards workers, saying its findings were approved by FIFA’s Council in March.

“Ahead of its annual congress next week, FIFA should make public the review it ordered into the organisation’s responsibilities to redress human rights abuses related to the 2022 World Cup,” said Steve Cockburn of the rights group.

“FIFA got the review months back but hasn’t shared or acted on it,” said Cockburn, the head of labour rights and sport, urging a swift response to the recommendations. “This delay extends the agony of families who lost loved ones and workers abused during FIFA’s main event. “The report might discomfort FIFA, but there’s strong public backing for action, with no excuse for further delays.”

In response, FIFA said stakeholders were studying and discussing the review.

“The findings will be published in due course once the review process has been completed,” a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters

“International experts and trade union representatives, who have assessed and collaborated in FIFA World Cup labor rights program, repeatedly testified to its robustness and recognized significant progress in labor rights.”

The review process is not expected to be completed before the FIFA Congress on May 17 in Bangkok.

In 2022, Amnesty and other groups urged FIFA to compensate Qatar’s migrant workers for rights abuses. FIFA matched the World Cup prize money with $440 million. At the Doha World Cup, FIFA president Gianni Infantino noted Qatar’s workers’ support fund, established in 2018, paid over $350 million in compensation, mainly for unpaid wages.
