Al-Sharaa Signals Continued Reform Drive Amid Syrian Economic Revival

President Ahmad Al-Sharaa said Syria’s planned economic reforms will go far beyond the recently announced salary increases for public sector employees, mentioning more upcoming reforms, according to Arab News.

Al-Sharaa said the government’s priorities since liberation have revolved around rebuilding state institutions, restoring security and stability, and improving citizens’ living conditions.

These remarks came during a meeting held on Wednesday with community leaders and residents from Aleppo province.

He further noted that the government had managed to raise wages to what he described as “acceptable levels.”

However, additional steps would be introduced to further boost economic conditions for Syrian people.

“This is not the ceiling, nor the end result,” the president added.

Economic Challenges

The president also noted that the country continues to grapple with deep economic and infrastructural challenges left behind by the former regime, with the heavily damaged energy sector emerging as one of the most urgent obstacles to the country’s wider economic recovery.

Al-Sharaa said Syria’s path to recovery would rely significantly on its people, describing Syrians as experienced and hardworking, while stressing the government’s role in enhancing conditions conducive to gradual economic recovery.

Recent Decrees

In March, Al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 67, approving a 50 percent increase in fixed salaries and wages for public sector employees.

Moreover, he issued another decree numbered 68, introducing further salary increases for employees across a range of public institutions.

These reforms were a part of wider efforts aimed at promoting living standards and fostering support for public sector workers.
