Syria’s Al-Sharaa Meets US State Secretary Rubio in New York

Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa held a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday to further accelerate Damascus’s efforts to redefine its course after the overthrow of Bashar Al-Assad in December, according to AP.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where Al-Sharaa was the first Syrian President to address the body in more than 60 years.

Rubio emphasized that Syria now has an opportunity to rebuild as a stable and sovereign state, especially after US President Donald Trump lifted sanctions imposed on Syria in May.

“They discussed ongoing counterterrorism efforts, efforts to locate missing Americans, and the importance of Israel-Syria relations in achieving greater regional security,” State Department Spokesman Tommy Pigott said.

On Friday, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani raised the Syrian flag over the embassy in Washington, voicing Damascus’s aspiration that all sanctions on Syria including the “Caesar Act” will be lifted.

At the same time, Al-Sharaa also renewed calls for the US Congress to remove the Caesar Act sanctions on Syria on Monday.

The Trump administration has already granted temporary waivers to parts of the sanctions. However, a complete repeal would require Congress approval.
