After UN Vote, Israeli Officials Cancel Visit to Washington

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, canceled a high-level Israeli’s delegation visit to Washington, D.C. after the US abstained from a UN vote demanding immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The UN resolution, put forward by the 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council, demands the immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan, the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, and the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian aid.

Israeli National Security Adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, and Ron Dermer, a member of the war cabinet and close adviser to Netanyahu, was scheduled to visit Washington on Monday night to discuss the Israeli offensive on Rafah and the alternatives, but the visit was canceled after the UN vote, according to CNN.

The White House spokesman, John Kirby, responded to Netanyahu’s decision to cancel the visit, expressing US disappointment by the decision.

“We are very disappointed that they will not be coming to Washington, D.C, to allow us to have a fulsome conversation with them about viable alternatives to going in on the ground in Rafah,” he told reporters.

The UN vote came amid growing tensions over the Israeli looming offensive on Rafah, where 1.4 million people are seeking refuge ahead of the expected military operation, which the US said would be “a huge mistake.”
