Abdullah Al-Sharbatly: Saudi Equestrian Star Competing at Paris Olympics 2024

Abdullah Al-Sharbatly is a world-renowned Saudi equestrian who competes in show jumping.

Al-Sharbatly is one of six Saudi athletes who have qualified for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games in Paris. He secured his spot after the Saudi show jumping team won the first place in the Group G qualifiers at the Doha International Show jumping Championship in February.

The Saudi equestrian will represent the Kingdom at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris along with his Saudi fellow riders Khaled Almobty, Abdul Rahman Al-Rajhi and Ramzy Al-Duhami.

Who is Al-Sharbatly?

Abdullah Waleed Al-Sharbatly was born in London, England, in 1982. His passion for horses started at the age of 6, when he sat on a horse for the first time. He started competing at horse riding when he was 9 years old.

The show jumping journey of Al-Sharbatly started at the age of 10, when he was watching the International Federation for Equestrian Sports’ (FEI) World Championship. Back then, he told his friends: “One day, that will be me winning gold.”

Individual Jumping

Abdullah Al-Sharbatly has embarked on fulfilling his dream early on. He became Arab Champion at the age of 16. He participated in the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games, in Kentucky, US, and won the silver medal. With this achievement, he became the first rider representing Saudi Arabia to win a medal at the world championships.

Moreover, Al-Sharbatly won the gold medal in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. He also won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Team Jumping

Al-Sharbatly won several gold medals in team jumping. For over a decade, the Saudi equestrian has been Asia’s most dominant show jumper. He is the winner of the largest number of gold medals in the history of the Asian Games.

Al-Sharbatly secured the first place at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. He also won gold medals in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China; the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia; and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

Furthermore, he secured the first place in team jumping at the 11th Arab Games 2007 in Cairo. He also participated in the Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games in 2017, and won the gold medal in team jumping.

The Olympic Dream

Al-Sharbatly’s biggest dream is to secure a gold medal at the Olympics. He was part of the team that won Saudi Arabia’s first team medal at the Olympic Games by claiming the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England.

The Saudi Olympic rider, now 41 years old, sees a ripe opportunity for securing a gold Olympic medal at Paris. The past four Olympic champions in men’s individual show jumping averaged 42 years old.

Al-Sharbatly believes that show jumping is a sport that needs experience. “The older you get, the better you get in show jumping and I certainly feel this improvement each year,” he said.
