Saudi Arabia Welcomes US Decision to Permanently Lift Sanctions on Syria

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry expressed the Kingdom’s welcome of the United States’ move to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, according to Al Arabiya.

In a new milestone for Syria’s future, the US Congress on Wednesday permanently lifted sanctions imposed on Syria during the rule of ousted president Bashar Al-Assad.

This decision unleashes new horizons for renewed international investment in Syria and more relations with the international community.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomes the decision of the United States of America to lift the sanctions imposed on the Syrian Arab Republic, under the Caesar Act,” Saudi Foreign Ministry said.

It also noted that this step will boost stability, prosperity and development in Syria and help fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Canada also lifted sanctions on Syria two weeks ago by removing the state from its list of state sponsors of terrorism and removing the designation of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as a “terrorist entity.”

Canada took this step following similar steps from the United States and the United Kingdom that lifted sanctions on Syria’s new President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and other senior officials and institutions.

This historic move comes also as a response to Al-Sharaa government’s efforts to rebuild relations with international community and advance Syria’s stability.

The UN Security Council also removed Al-Sharaa from a terrorism sanctions list.

This diplomatic initiative received support by the United States which urged for lifting all sanctions to allow the new Syrian President to travel more freely, without needing to wait for waivers for some trips.

In recent months, Damascus have warmed relation with several countries around the world with the US lifting sanctions and European powers advancing closer ties.
