Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold a landmark meeting with US President Donald Trump on December 29 to discuss the second phase of the Gaza peace plan that halted the two-year war on Gaza, according to Reuters.
“The Prime Minister will meet with President Trump on Monday, December 29 they will discuss the future steps and phases and the international stabilization force of the ceasefire plan,” government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian said in an online briefing to reporters.
During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Netanyahu said on Sunday that the meeting will delve into potential pathways to peace and options to end the rule of the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza.
“I will be having very important conversations at the end of the month on how to ensure the second phase will be achieved,” Netanyahu added.
Since the Gaza truce took effect on October 10, Hamas has released all 20 living hostages and handed over 27 bodies in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees and prisoners.
However, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of breaching the truce particularly as Trump’s peace plan does not determine several crucial issues such as Hamas disarmament, the governance of post-war Gaza and the composition and mandate of an international security force in the enclave.
On December 1, Netanyahu’s office revealed that Trump had invited Netanyahu to the White House. At the same time, Israeli media have reported that both leaders may meet in Florida.
