Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC) has achieved a significant medical milestone through a successful bone marrow transplant.
According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the operation was based on the donation of the patient’s sibling as the young girl suffers acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Thankfully, the girl has recovered and been discharged from the hospital in good health.

With the illness being considered as total body irradiation, the medical team has employed the advanced VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy) technique.
This marks the first time for this technology to be used in the Middle East for such a case.

Supervised by the Radiation Therapy and Medical Physics departments, this innovative technology performs full-body radiation therapy for children at an early age.
Meanwhile, it requires only a single position throughout the treatment period.
This is unlike the traditional methods that require the child to take various positions during therapy.

Crucially, this case represents the starting point for a pediatric bone marrow transplant program.
This program aims to treat and cure various conditions, including acute leukemia, hereditary blood disorders, autoimmune diseases, and immunodeficiency disorders.
